Don't wait for "Somebody"

Out of all my years of doing Kung Fu, this one is definitely my most notable. Throughout the years, whenever students were asked to help out with anything, I generally never volunteered. Because I never stepped up, somebody else always did. Now, being more involved in the school, taking initiative isn't as intimidating as it used to be. Also, it's always a good way to learn new things and to have fun.

This past Thursday, Sifu Brinker brought up an opportunity for somebody new to spearhead our adopt-a-driveway program this year. I'm not 100% sure if it was his intention,  but I got the impression he was telling specifically his year's black belt candidates (myself included) to get to work. So, on our way home, my sister and I discussed ways that we could get involved. Other than revising the schedule, (which you can find on Hannah Meier's Kwoon Talk profile), we had the thought to integrate a system to remind the team when we need to shovel. I guess the main point to this post is to recognize how easy it can be to be even a tiny bit more involved with our school. All one really has to do is step up when opportunities are presented - instead of waiting for the same old guys to get the job done.

Memorization + a bit more

I don't have much to talk about this week. However, over this weekend, I spent a lot of time working on memorizing "Mastery". Just last night, I wrote it all from memory, for the first time. Needless to say, I'm prpud of myself for this, though it's a small accomplishment in the long run. I'm going to keep working on this, to entrench it even further into my mind, so that when I need it, it'll be trivial. Practice

Today, I picked up one of my Rubik's cubes. It was really the first time in a couple months that'd done so, and I felt confident I would have the same abilities I'd had last autumn. This was not the case. My average then was about 25 seconds per solve. Now, I'm having trouble breaking 30. Some of my more used turning patterns came back easily, but others, the ones I'd been new with when I'd taken my break, were gone completely from my memory. A couple minutes with my notes brought them back, but they were still foggy and required lots of thought. My muscle memory had essentially faded. This really showed me a lot of things involving practice and consistency. If you don't practice something, you will definetly not improve and may even lose that skill completely. Solving these puzzles is a hobby I'm looking forwards to picking back up, but that won't be possible without practice.

A New Year

Well, happy new year everyone! As I'm sure we all know, most people, myself included, make "New Year's Resolutions", as a kind of promise to themselves over the next year. This year, my resolution isn't exactly changing a habit of mine. Instead, I decided my 2019 resolution would be to keep up my Kung Fu training at the same level a it was over the past year. I know this won't be as easy as it was over 2018, but I'm going to do my best to get out to Kung Fu as much as possible. While my sister's away on her Germany trip, this will be especially difficult, as I'll only be able to drive into town with my parents. In these situations, I plan to train at home instead when going in to the Kwoon isn't an option. As well, I'd like to get a job sometime in 2019. This would definetely conflict with my Kung Fu schedule, but I'll do my best should the situation arise. Over this next year, and hopefully longer, I'm going to hold myself acco...
